What made you get Franc in the first place?
Companionship and my husband’s continuous nagging as he is obsessed with Frenchies!
How did you choose the breed?
I love their cheeky characteristics, loyalty, need for attention, temperament and love of brisk walks rather than marathons!
What is the most rewarding thing you have found about owning a pet?
His unconditional love and “cwtches” (hug in Wales). He has also been a saviour in getting us out of the house during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
Have you encountered any problems (illnesses, behavioural, social) with Franc?
We’ve been very lucky in terms of the usual health issues associated with Frenchie’s. Although he did have separation anxiety when he was young, and even though he is very independent now, he still insists on sleeping with us every night. His temperament is usually very good, but Franc loves zoomies and uses them to tell us if he needs to go to the loo, is too hot, or is hangry.
What is your top tip for people thinking about adding a pet to their family?
French Bulldogs in particular are expensive to buy, keep and insure. Before committing to getting one, make sure you are able to afford the monthly costs (approx. £100), so that the dog’s needs do not get neglected or it ends up having to be re-homed.
Do you have any funny stories to share with us about Franc?
We were told Frenchie’s were chilled dogs. Now, Franc may like to chill and be a couch potato, but he is not chilled at his core. He’s a maniac at times, stubborn, does whatever he wants and takes us on walks where ever he wants. He has an incredible physique because of his love of charging during his walks, coining his nick name “Franc the Tank”. He loves to do yoga stretches every morning, with his version of downward dog and the cobra pose. He farts a lot, snores a lot and even has dreams where he starts popping air bubbles from his cheeks. He must also have a built in clock, as every day without fail, he knows what time to sit in the window and wait for his Daddy to come home from work. You know when he’s there waiting for you, as you can make out the silhouette of his bat ears just above the window sill. What a character!
